1947 Earth: A Heartbreaking Tale of Partition
1947 Earth is a 1999 Hindi movie directed by Deepa Mehta, based on the novel Cracking India by Bapsi Sidhwa. The movie depicts the tragic events of the 1947 partition of India through the eyes of a young Parsi girl named Lenny, who lives in Lahore with her wealthy family and their Hindu nanny, Shanta.
The movie shows how the peaceful coexistence of Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs in Lahore is shattered by the rising tide of religious and political violence that follows the announcement of the partition. Lenny's nanny Shanta becomes the object of desire for two men: Hassan, a Muslim masseur who works for Lenny's family, and Dil Navaz, a Sikh ice-candy man who is also a friend of Lenny. Their rivalry turns into hatred as they join opposing sides in the communal riots that engulf the city.
Lenny witnesses the horrors of partition as her friends and neighbors are killed, raped or displaced by the mobs. She also discovers the betrayal of Dil Navaz, who kidnaps Shanta and delivers her to a group of Sikh refugees who want to avenge their womenfolk. The movie ends with Lenny's voice-over saying that she never saw Shanta again, and that she still dreams of her.
1947 Earth is a powerful and poignant movie that portrays the human cost of partition and the loss of innocence. The movie features stellar performances by Aamir Khan as Dil Navaz, Nandita Das as Shanta, Rahul Khanna as Hassan and Maia Sethna as Lenny. The movie also has a haunting soundtrack composed by A.R. Rahman, featuring songs by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Jagjit Singh.1947 Earth received critical acclaim and several awards, including the Best Film Award at the 1999 Chicago International Film Festival and the Best Foreign Film Award at the 2000 Santa Monica Film Festival. The movie was also India's official entry for the 2000 Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category, but it was not nominated.
The movie faced controversy and censorship in India and Pakistan, where it was banned for its depiction of violence and sexual abuse during partition. Some religious groups also protested against the movie for showing interfaith relationships and portraying their communities in a negative light. The movie was released in India with several cuts and disclaimers, and it was only shown in a few theaters.
Despite the challenges, 1947 Earth remains one of the most acclaimed and influential movies about partition.
